Boundary Issues
- Set clear boundaries at the beginning of the relationship
- Clarify boundaries with families over time, as they will change
- Keep the family’s privacy as a major guiding value
- Be aware of your own emotional and physical needs as much as possible and don’t meet those needs via the family
- Obtain the family’s informed and written consent for all activities
- Promote a psychological separateness from the family—goal is for the family to become more self-sufficient
- Consider cultural context of boundaries
- Avoid dual relationships
- Use peer consultation and formal supervision regularly
- Refer to code of ethics when necessary
