First Steps: Service Coordinator

Unit III Lesson 3: Participants in IFSP meetings

In order to support families to be active, equal participants in the IFSP meeting, it is imporatant for the service coordinator to help the family prepare several different pieces of information to share at the meeting. This information is outlined below.

Information for families to share at the initial IFSP meeting

  1. Define their own present level of development and that of their child
  2. Have the outcomes they want for their child and their family developed before the meeting
  3. Identify their supports and resources for their child and their family
  4. Decide with the service coordinator when they would like to select their early intervention providers (either in the IFSP meeting or afterwards)

Next are the regulations that govern how an IFSP is developed, reviewed and evaluated. Read the statutes carefully and think about how they will be applied.

Reflections questions:

What strategies can you think of that would make it easier and more comfortable for families to share about themselves?
