First Steps: Service Coordinator
Skills for competencies
The skills required to meet these competencies successfully include:
1. Providing service coordination based on the principles of family-centered, community-based, culturally competent care
2. Facilitating IFSP meetings
3. Identifying and mobilizing resources with families in the context of IFSP development and implementation
4. Implementing families’ rights to due process, procedural safeguards, and complaint resolution
5. Ensuring families understand what to expect during transition from one service setting to another or from services under Part C (birth - 2 years) to services for 3 – 5 year olds, Part B
6. Ensuring families are aware of the range of services provided by community and state resources (i.e., respite, parent to parent groups, WIC, Maternal/Child Health Clinics, child care resources, financial assistance programs)
7. Accessing information locally, statewide, and nationally for families around areas of their child’s disability, family support programs, etc.
8. Ensuring families understand the quantity, range, and type of services delivered by service providers
9. Filling in gaps and reducing overlaps in services in local/regional areas of services from multiple sources with and for children and families
10. Facilitating effective communication and listening skills in professional/family and professional/professional interactions
11. Writing, with the family, outcomes for the IFSP
12. Monitoring the IFSP to assure that the child’s and family’s needs are being met through accurate and updated records
13. Supporting the family in a wide range of advocacy efforts from information gathering to obtaining an attorney
14. Matching family needs to community resources
15. Advocating with and for the child and family
16. Respecting the cultural diversity of families
