These courses are designed to give providers new to the program skills for working with families in their natural environment. In many cases services will be provided to an infant or toddler who really is not capable of communicating all of their needs. In order to focus on the needs of the family environment there are two main themes in all the modules: the family as a unit that is in need of services to help a child and the natural environment that these services will be provided in.
Registration for the modules is open at all times. The course design (except for Module I: Orientation which takes about five to seven hours) is to complete a section of the module each day to be prepared for the assessment the end of the week. The assessment opens at 8:00 A.M. every Monday and is taken down every Sunday night at midnight for maintenance purposes. If the assessment is not passed, it can now be retaken immediately.
Additional materials have been provided to help everyone through the material and learn about the philosophy, laws, and rules that make First Steps a unique program. Each module will build on the previous to teach methods that help the family learn about the challenges and their role in helping their children get the most benefit from the program.
The courses are designed to be completed over the course of a week. There are several components in each module. Each module has an expectation of how long it will take to complete. The content is available at all times.
First Steps training is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Division of Special Education, through federal funding appropriated in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, Public Law 105-17).
DESE does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or disability in their programs, services, or employment practices.
